First of all, prepare the eggs by beating them until they are lightly bubbled. Heat a small amount of oil in a pan over a medium heat and then pour just enough of the eggs to cover the bottom of the pan. Using a fork, pull in along the edge of the cooking eggs, and then tilt the pan so that the liquid on top flows over the edge and onto the pan underneath. The desire to be beautiful is as old as civilization. People of all times and places have shown their willingness to endure trouble and even pain in order to look better. This willingness has enabled a $160 billion-a-year global industry to grow by providing cosmetics, skin and hair care products, fragrances, cosmetic surgery, health clubs, and diet pills.  The importance that people place on beauty is not merely vanity. Being physically attractive provides enormous advantages. Good-looking men and women are judged to be more intelligent. They also earn more, and are more likely to marry. But beauty matters most for reproductive success, especially for women. One study showed that men across 37 different cultures put a woman's physical attractiveness at the top or near the top of their lists of the important factors in their mating preferences. Is it any wonder then that Americans spend more each year on improving their appearance than on improving their minds?

Dog tags have been part of an American army soldier's standard equipment since 1906. Traditionally, a soldier's name, Social Security number, religion, and blood type were recorded on the dog tag. Now advances in technology may allow far more information to be carried on a dog tag. Leaders of the U.S. military have asked several companies to create a standard for a new version of the dog tag called a personal information carrier. Many say that smart cards, a technology that stores data on a credit card-sized device, will be the preferred choice, because the equipment for reading them is widely available and less expensive than competing solutions.  Whatever technology is eventually selected, personal information carriers will be used to store not only the information found on dog tags, but also a soldier's entire medical history, including X-rays, known allergies, electrocardiograms, and much more. In addition to durability and storage capacity, one of the most important concerns is that the information stored on the personal information carriers be kept private. Thus, the companies competing to win the bid to supply the new devices are focusing more attention on the use of encryption technology.

The large-scale import of inexpensive wood carvings from China and Southeast Asia has made the lives of Taiwanese wood carvers more difficult. In Sanyi, the island's wood carving center, as much as 80 percent of the wood carvings offered for sale are imported. The majority of these are mass-manufactured items, including imitations of works by Taiwanese wood carving masters. Their low prices, and the confusion they cause among buyers, have made Taiwanese wood carvers suffer economically. To help consumers differentiate between true Taiwanese wood carvings hand-made by masters and the mass-produced versions on the market, a certification system was set up recently. Archaeologists from all over the world are drawn to Easter Island by its mysterious statues. On average, each statue stands a little over four meters high and weighs 14 tons. All of the statues are almost identical in design, with a long head and ears, a large nose, thick lips, and a short torso with hands held across the belly.  The question that archaeologists have been trying to answer for many years is who built these statues and why. With the help of technological advances, they are closer than ever to some definite answers. Most anthropologists now agree that the statue builders originally came from Polynesia. An important part of the evidence for this claim is the result of DNA testing done on skeletons found on Easter Island. It showed a close genetic relationship between the former inhabitants of Easter Island and natives living in Polynesia today.  As for the reason why the Easter Islanders built the statues, this is more controversial. Some experts believe that they were an important part of religious life on the island. One clue is that nearly all the statues face away from the sea toward places where food was probably grown, leading to the conclusion that the statues might have been intended to bless crops that were being grown.
