Much of literary criticism looks at works regardless of the time they were written in; in other words, too many literary critics judge past works by the standards of their own time and values. For example, in today's world nearly everyone in developing and developed countries can read, a fact many of these professional critics ignore. Only in the late 19th century did public education slowly develop, thereby allowing "the masses" to read and write. Before that, only the educated of the upper classes could enjoy reading. Novels written at that time were aimed at these classes; those aimed at the "general reading public" developed only in the 20th century. It is unfair, therefore, to judge books written more than a hundred years ago by today's social values.

OK, guys, listen up. My name is Eric Thurmond, and I'm the leader of the second floor. For all you new guys, we have some rules around here that have worked over the years to everyone's advantage, and we need you to observe them. First, keep the bathroom clean. We have 24 guys in six rooms on this floor, so we have to keep things in good order, especially the bathroom. No one wants to be getting sick, right? Anyone caught not cooperating on keeping the bathroom clean will have bathroom duty two times. Otherwise, we take turns, two different guys each weekend throughout the semester. Second, for security reasons, make sure you lock the gate if you come back after 10:00 p.m. I don't have to explain that. Finally, keep it quiet especially at night! We're here to study, not to fool around all day. Violators will be warned only once on this rule, then, you're out!

I'm now adding some conditioner after shampooing her hair. Remember, though, to make sure to wash out all the soap before adding the conditioner. Add it when the hair is still wet. As with shampooing, gently massage the conditioner into the hair, right down to the skin. Likewise, never use your fingernails to scrub the hair or the skin. That will only break the hair or loosen the hair on the scalp, resulting in dry skin or "snow." Leave the conditioner there for 10 to 15 minutes, wash thoroughly, and then take your client to the next step, the manicure. For that, allow me to introduce Kerri Halloway, who will demonstrate the correct way to treat fingernails.

The poor guy acts as if he were a millionaire. 2)as if/as though所引導的副詞子句若表示與過去事實相反時, 動詞使用過去完成式 (had + p.p.)。 例:He talked as if he had been to the States before. He talks as if he knows everything about it.
